Which article of legislation for gun control is the one that stops criminals in their tracks?
The truth is that, if criminals cared for the law, there would be no need for the term "Law-abiding citizen", or even "criminal" for that matter. Unfortunately that is not the case, yet still legislation is passed or proposed that either continually tightens, or threatens to tighten the reigns on law-abiding citizens of the pro 2A community; while criminals pay the law no mind.
Government steps in with proposed "legislative solutions" that go after manufacturers, law-abiding firearm owners, and inevitably the safety of our families. As a member of the pro 2A community, it is dis-heartening to see what comes out of the capitol in this regard. We the people, the law-abiding citizens of this country should not be the scapegoats for criminal behavior.
Whether it is by police brutality, gang-violence, or mass shootings among other events of gun-violence in our communities, there are clear signs that a discussion needs to be had to develop real solutions to counteract a very real criminal threat to the peace of our communities. There is something even more important that gets overlooked in the great gun debate; Pro 2A community members are NOT pro gun violence. And I would hope that anti-gunners are NOT out to leave the families of our communities defenseless to this very real criminal threat to our safety.
Now what? How do we begin to rectify a history of broken perspectives that lend to the perpetuation of a solution-less debate?
Finding common ground.
I was listening to a TED Talk this past week entitled "How to disagree productively and find common ground", and in this talk, Julia Dhar, Business Strategist and Champion Debater, opened with this statement:
"Somedays, it feels like the only thing we can agree on,
is that we can't agree on anything."
~ Julia Dhar
Julia goes on to make the point that, in debate, the goal of the participants should be less focused on being the "Winner" and more focused on finding common ground. You can check it out for more details here.
It is common ground that connects two opposing forces (ex. the 2A community vs. Anti-Gunners). Common ground reminds us that we all have the same overall goal; Safe and peaceful communities for ourselves and our loved ones.
When we as a country suffer the pain of gun violence, it is heart wrenching. I can only imagine the pain, and grief of gun-violence taking a loved one from my own home. I look into the faces of my children, and I am brought to tears at the thought of that loss. As a pro 2A community member, I own my firearms as a means to protect the lives of my loved ones against those criminally minded individuals that do not hold the same moral values. My goal is a safer community for all of us. My method is to support our 2A rights and to teach others to be well-informed and trained to live as responsibly armed citizens.
